Local pharmcist, James Harvey Howe, created a remedy for his wife’s indigestion before they left on a cruise. His mint flavored calcium carbonate tablets were a hit with his wife and the other passengers.
In 1930, Howe held a radio contest to find a name for the product. A nurse came up with “Tums for the Tummy,” shortened to “Tums.” They’ve been made in downtown St. Louis across from Busch Stadium ever since.
