1997 Pope John Paul II honored the Cathedral of St. Louis by making it a Basilica, a place of worship of special distinction. The Old Cathedral is also a basilica, making St. Louis one of the few cities with two. ---- In the US only New York, Chicago, and San Antonio have multiple Basilicas.
