Henry Shaw was a new immigrant from England when he arrived in St. Louis on May 4, 1819. He brought with him a stock of cutlery to start a business that ballooned into a successful import-export business. Later he made real estate investments and after visiting the Royal Gardens in London he was inspired to design and construct what is now the Missouri Botanical Gardens & Tower Grove Park.
